Biafra: Ohanaeze Youth Council Urges S' East Govs to Declare May 30 ‘Day of Mourning’

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has called on governors of the South-East and the old Eastern region to officially declare every May 30 as a ‘Day of Mourning’ in remembrance of victims of the 1967-1970 Nigerian Civil War.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National President, Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, and Secretary-General, Ifeanyichukwu Nweke, the group urged Ndigbo worldwide to wear black on May 30 to honour those who died during the war, which it described as a genocide against the Igbo people.

The OYC also advised residents of the old Eastern region to close their business outlets on May 30, 2026, as part of activities to commemorate the day.

“Igbo Governors and other leaders have abandoned the observance of Biafra Hero’s Day, a sombre memorial of the tragic period in Ndigbo’s history, specifically the Biafra Genocide 1967-1970,” the statement said.

The youth group drew a comparison with the Yoruba, noting that they consistently commemorate June 12 in honour of Moshood Abiola, while Igbo political leaders have failed to institute a similar annual event for civil war victims.

The OYC warned that political office holders, past and present who have worked against Igbo interests would be swept away by a “political Tsunami” in the 2027 elections.

The group further appealed to President Bola Tinubu to take reconciliatory steps by releasing the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, and other pro-Biafra agitators.
