2027: No Guarantee Atiku Will Defeat Obi at Primaries – Dele Momodu

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has declared that there is no certainty former Vice President Atiku Abubakar would defeat Peter Obi if both contest against each other at any presidential primaries.

Momodu made the remark on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, as political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He spoke in the context of Peter Obi’s reported defection from the ADC to the newly formed Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).“There is no guarantee that Atiku will defeat Obi at the primaries,” Momodu stated. He added that Obi is not his enemy and described the move as an opportunity for the former Anambra governor to test his popularity elsewhere.

“You cannot force Atiku,” he continued. “How are you sure that Atiku will retain all those who voted for him the last time? What is the guarantee that Obi and Kwankwaso are the only people who will retain all those who voted for them the last time?”

Momodu noted that the political situation has changed significantly since the 2023 elections. He claimed that even President Bola Tinubu, if a free and fair election is held today, “might not even get three million votes.”

The comments reflect ongoing uncertainties and horse-trading within Nigeria’s opposition politics as major figures reposition themselves for the next presidential race.
