Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has won the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary, defeating his major rivals, Rotimi Amaechi and Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, to emerge as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 general election.
Official results announced by the party’s electoral committee showed Atiku polling a commanding 1,846,370 votes. Rotimi Amaechi came a distant second with 504,117 votes, while Mohammed Hayatu-Deen secured 177,120 votes.
The primary recorded over 2.5 million votes cast out of more than 3 million registered ADC members.
Atiku’s victory consolidates his position as the ADC’s presidential candidate ahead of next year’s polls.
The former Vice President, who recently joined the ADC, described the process as transparent and credible.
However, both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen have rejected the results, alleging irregularities, voter disenfranchisement, and other malpractices in the direct primary held across the country.
In his acceptance remarks, Atiku called for unity within the party, urging all members and contestants to put their differences aside and work together to rescue Nigeria from what he described as the APC’s economic mismanagement.
The development sets up a potentially intense three-way contest in 2027, with President Bola Tinubu expected to seek re-election on the APC platform, while other opposition figures continue to realign.
