Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and prominent human rights activist, has revealed why he declined an invitation to the national opposition summit held on Saturday, April 25, 2026, in Ibadan, Oyo State.
In a statement shared on his official social media accounts, Sowore criticized the gathering, describing it as an attempt to repackage veteran politicians who he believes previously mismanaged the country.
“I was invited to attend the so-called ‘Opposition Summit’ in Ibadan, but I declined,” Sowore stated.
“There is no need to pretend that the same men (and a few women) who held Nigeria to ransom for years, presiding over stagnation, corruption, and systemic decay, can suddenly reinvent themselves as champions of progress or defenders of the people.”
He emphasized that Nigerians deserve real change rather than a reshuffling of old political figures.“Not all Nigerians are suffering from amnesia,” he added.
Sowore made it clear that his party, the AAC, would not participate in what he termed a “charade designed to recycle failed political actors under the guise of ‘opposition.’
”Instead, he said the AAC remains committed to building “a formidable, people-driven alternative, one rooted in integrity, accountability, and genuine transformation.”
Sowore concluded: “Nigeria does not need a rearrangement of the same broken pieces; it needs a complete break from the past.”
The Ibadan summit brought together leaders from several opposition parties, who reportedly resolved to present a united front, including possibly fielding a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, while raising concerns about the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Sowore’s position aligns with his long-standing criticism of mainstream opposition figures, whom he has previously accused of lacking genuine commitment to systemic reform.
