A United States lawmaker, Riley Moore, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for failing to meet the conditions attached to American security assistance to Nigeria.
Moore, who represents West Virginia’s 2nd Congressional District, stated that the Tinubu administration has not lived up to the requirements set by the US appropriations committee for security aid.
In a statement, he urged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take this non-compliance into account when administering funding for the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years (FY26 and FY27).
“In my view, the Tinubu administration has failed to live up to the conditions the appropriations committee placed on security assistance,” Moore said. “I urge @SecRubio to take this into account in administering both FY26 and FY27 funding.”
US security assistance to Nigeria includes military training, supply of equipment, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism support aimed at tackling insurgency, banditry, and organised crime.
The aid is usually conditioned on compliance with human rights standards, transparency and accountability in the use of funds, as well as measurable progress in addressing security challenges.
Moore’s criticism is linked to ongoing concerns about insecurity in Nigeria, particularly violence affecting Christian communities.
He had previously raised alarm over the continued killing of Christians despite years of US support.
The Nigerian government has consistently rejected claims of targeted religious persecution, insisting that the violence affects both Christians and Muslims and stems from broader criminal and security issues rather than religious motives.
Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has also defended military cooperation with the United States, stating that it has strengthened the country’s capacity to fight security threats without compromising national sovereignty.
This includes the recent arrival of US personnel and equipment in February.
Moore had earlier warned that failure to address the situation could allow terrorists to gain a stronger foothold in Nigeria, stressing the need for cooperative efforts between the two countries.
