US President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy after resharing a post on Truth Social that proposes renaming the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz as the “Strait of Trump.”
The reshared post, which Trump amplified late on Wednesday, included a modified map clearly labelling the narrow waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman as the “Strait of Trump.”
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil supplies passes.
It has been at the centre of heightened tensions following the US naval blockade of Iranian vessels in the area.
Trump’s action comes amid ongoing standoff with Iran over its nuclear programme and the US-imposed blockade, which the President has described as “100% foolproof.”
There is no indication of any formal US government move to officially rename the strait, which is internationally recognised as the Strait of Hormuz.
However, Trump’s decision to reshare the post has been interpreted by many as him endorsing or humouring the idea.This is not the first time Trump has floated renaming geographic features.
He had earlier faced criticism for similar suggestions, including references to the Gulf of Mexico.
The move has triggered widespread reactions online, with some viewing it as typical Trump humour or branding, while others see it as provocative amid sensitive geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
The Iranian government is yet to react officially to the reshared post.
