Former Secretary to the Yobe State Government (SSG), Baba Mallam Wali, has emerged as the preferred candidate of Governor Mai Mala Buni to succeed him in the 2027 governorship election.
Reliable sources within the Yobe State APC revealed that Governor Buni has anointed Wali as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 polls.
Baba Mallam Wali, who served for many years as SSG under Governor Buni (and previously under former Governor Ibrahim Gaidam), is highly regarded as a seasoned technocrat and administrator with deep knowledge of governance in the state.
His emergence is seen as part of ongoing succession arrangements within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Yobe State.
The party had earlier adopted consensus as the mode for selecting candidates for the 2027 governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly elections.
Stakeholders, including Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, had announced the adoption of consensus after a high-level meeting in Damaturu.
Although other aspirants such as Senator Ibrahim Bomai and Kashim Tumsah have shown interest by purchasing nomination forms recently, indications suggest that the party leadership is tilting strongly towards Wali under the consensus arrangement.
Political observers note that if successfully nominated, Wali would be the first governor from Zone C of the state, a development many consider as balancing political power rotation in Yobe.Governor Buni is expected to complete his second term in 2027.
His administration has continued to emphasise continuity, stability, and consolidation of ongoing developmental projects.
As the political atmosphere heats up, party faithful are watching closely to see how the consensus arrangement will play out and whether other interested aspirants will align with the governor’s preference or challenge it.
