President Donald Trump announced on Sunday, April 5, 2026, that U.S. forces successfully rescued the second crew member of a downed F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet from inside Iran in what he described as one of the most daring search and rescue operations in American history.
The airman, a highly respected Colonel serving as the weapons system officer, had been missing since Friday after Iranian forces shot down the two-person jet over a remote, mountainous area of Iran.
The pilot of the aircraft was rescued earlier on Friday.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump declared: “WE GOT HIM! My fellow Americans, over the past several hours, the United States Military pulled off one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in U.S. History... He sustained injuries, but he will be just fine.”
The high-risk operation involved dozens of aircraft providing cover for special forces to locate and extract the injured airman from deep behind enemy lines, where he was reportedly being hunted in treacherous terrain.
Trump hailed the mission as “miraculous” and praised the U.S. military’s swift and effective action.
The rescue comes amid escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, including ongoing threats over the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional conflict. Both crew members are now reported safe.
U.S. officials have described the multi-day effort as complex and high-stakes, involving coordinated air and ground assets to beat Iranian search parties to the location.
