The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Niger Delta (PIND) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing sustainable development across the Niger Delta region.
The partnership seeks to move beyond fragmented, short-term projects to more integrated, multi-sector initiatives. It will combine enterprise growth, clean energy, innovation, and community resilience to attract investment and create lasting impact.
The MoU was signed on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. It establishes a framework for joint programme design, implementation, scaling, and mobilisation of partnerships involving government, the private sector, civil society, and development finance institutions.
Key focus areas include renewable energy access for underserved communities, growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), trade facilitation, digital transformation, innovation, and conflict-sensitive peacebuilding.
In the coming months, the two organisations will develop a three-year joint programme and financing framework, set up a joint technical working group, and identify initial investment-ready projects.
Elsie Attafuah, UNDP Nigeria Resident Representative, said the collaboration would deliver scalable, inclusive solutions by combining UNDP’s global expertise with PIND’s deep local knowledge.
“By combining UNDP’s global experience with PIND’s deep regional knowledge, we can deliver solutions that are scalable, inclusive, and responsive to local realities, while unlocking pathways for investment and long-term impact,” she stated.
Sam Daibo, PIND Executive Director, described the partnership as a step towards strengthening systems that link economic opportunity, peacebuilding, and resilience.
“This partnership strengthens systems that connect economic opportunity, peacebuilding, and resilience. Together with UNDP, we can scale locally grounded, investment-ready solutions capable of delivering lasting impact across the Niger Delta,” he added.
PIND brings over 15 years of experience in regional development and peacebuilding, while UNDP contributes its global policy advisory and investment mobilisation capabilities.
The initiative is expected to evolve into a broader multi-state, multi-partner platform supporting inclusive growth and sustainable development in the Niger Delta.
