US President Donald Trump has cancelled a planned trip by his senior envoys to Pakistan for indirect peace negotiations with Iran, citing a lack of meaningful progress and internal issues within the Iranian leadership.
The announcement came on Saturday after it emerged that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi had left Islamabad without engaging directly with the US side.
Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner were scheduled to travel to the Pakistani capital for the talks.
In comments to Fox News and on Truth Social, Trump stated that he called off the delegation’s journey because it was not worth the long travel time “to sit around talking about nothing.”
“We have all the cards. They can call us anytime they want, but you’re not going to be making any more 18-hour flights,” Trump said.
He added that the cancellation does not signal an immediate resumption of hostilities in the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran, describing the war as still “on hold” while blaming “infighting” in Tehran for stalling diplomatic efforts.
Trump further claimed that a “much better” proposal from Iran arrived shortly after he scrapped the trip.
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz, as indirect talks mediated through Pakistan have struggled to gain momentum.
