Opposition Parties Demand INEC Extend Party Primaries Deadline to End of July

Major opposition political parties in Nigeria have urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to extend the deadline for conducting party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections to the end of July 2026.

The demand was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a national summit of opposition political parties held on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to the communiqué, the parties described the current INEC guidelines and timelines which set the deadline for primaries at May 30, 2026 as obstacles deliberately designed to disadvantage opposition parties.

“We therefore demand that INEC extends the deadline for primaries till the end of July, 2026,” the communiqué stated.

The summit, which brought together leaders from parties including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), also resolved to field a single presidential candidate against President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Additionally, the opposition leaders expressed no confidence in INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, accusing him of bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and called for him not to preside over the 2027 elections.

The Ibadan summit is seen as a significant move by opposition forces to consolidate and present a united front against the APC in the next general polls.
