Panic gripped parts of Lagos early on Saturday, April 4, 2026, as a fire outbreak tore through sections of Yaba Market, destroying shops and goods worth billions of naira.
The blaze reportedly started around 3 a.m. in the Popo section of the market, specifically affecting areas like Ajibode Street. Thick smoke and raging flames engulfed several shops, forcing traders and residents to rush in and salvage whatever they could amid the chaos.
Eyewitnesses and social media users shared distressing videos and accounts of the incident. One TikTok livestreamer, Lugar Feliz, confirmed that firefighters were on the scene. Others described the fire as “terrible,” with reports of multiple shops being completely razed.
Traders expressed deep frustration over the emergency response. Residents noted that despite the Lagos State Fire Service headquarters being just 10 minutes away, only limited resources were initially deployed. Some claimed that out of three fire trucks that arrived, only one had water, hampering containment efforts.
As of Saturday morning, the exact cause of the fire remained unknown, and no official statement had been issued by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service on the full extent of the damage or any possible casualties. Firefighting operations were still ongoing.
This latest incident has once again highlighted concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in Lagos markets, as traders count heavy financial losses from the destruction of their wares and properties.
