Taraba Government Launches Evacuation of Students from Plateau State

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has directed the immediate deployment of 16 Hummer buses, supported by security escorts, to evacuate Taraba indigenes studying in Jos, Plateau State, amid escalating security concerns following recent attacks in the area.

The move comes after the National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTAS), University of Jos Chapter, petitioned the state government last week for urgent assistance. In a formal letter signed by President Sankun Solomon Gam and Assistant Secretary-General Samuel Anyar Bawun Bente, the union highlighted growing fears for the safety of students living in increasingly unsafe environments due to rising tensions and violence in Plateau State.

According to government sources, the buses were quickly mobilized to ensure the safe return or relocation of the affected students. Security personnel accompanied the convoy to protect the operation, which officials described as swift and well-coordinated.

Speaking on the development over the weekend, Governor Kefas reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to the welfare of Taraba citizens, especially students pursuing higher education both within Nigeria and internationally. He stressed that protecting their lives and ensuring minimal disruption to their academic pursuits remains a top priority.

The proactive evacuation has received widespread praise as a responsible step to safeguard young lives during the period of unrest in Plateau State. This action aligns with similar efforts by other state governments responding to the security situation around the University of Jos.

The situation in Plateau remains fluid, with the university management earlier ordering students to vacate hostels as a precautionary measure.
