Gunmen ambushed mourners returning from a burial ceremony, killing three people and abducting two others in Sati Ikov Council Ward, Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack occurred on Saturday night, April 25, 2026, near the Sati-Ikov community as the victims made their way back from the funeral.
The armed men opened fire on the group, killing three young men and kidnapping a male and a female.
They also robbed some residents and seized the victims’ bags.
The deceased have been identified as:
Bem Msughter from Mbakyombo, Daav-Ikov
Aondo Chia from Mbamegh, Daav-Ikov
Sunday Terwase from Mbakyor, Daav-Ikov
The abducted victims are Aondongu Amos (a POS operator at Sati-Ikov) and Mrs Arinze (an Igbo patent medicine trader in Sati-Ikov).
Simon Gabo, the lawmaker representing Ushongo State Constituency and Deputy Majority Chief Whip of the Benue State House of Assembly, confirmed the incident. He said he received reports from constituents around 4 a.m. on Sunday.
“I received information from my people who called today (Sunday) at about 4 a.m. that yesterday (Saturday) night, they went for a burial, and on their way back, they ran into armed men. The armed men shot and killed three of them and collected their bags. They also robbed some residents and kidnapped two persons. The victims were all young men,” Gabo stated.
He added that armed groups have turned his community into a “battlefield” in recent weeks, with several deaths recorded.
Gabo noted that the attackers are suspected to be local militias who cross from Katsina-Ala LGA into Ushongo through mountainous and forested areas to carry out raids before retreating.
The lawmaker said he had reported the matter to the police, and the Divisional Police Officer deployed personnel to the area on Sunday morning.
The Benue State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, could not be reached for comment as of the time of reporting.
This latest incident has heightened fear among residents amid persistent insecurity in parts of the state.
