Sen Ireti Kingibe Demands Thorough Probe into Killing of NYSC Member by Soldiers

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a serving National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, who was killed during a security operation by soldiers of the Guards Brigade Quick Response Group in Dei-Dei, Abuja.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, April 25, 2026, at Shagari Estate when troops responded to a distress call following an alleged armed robbery attack in the area.

Preliminary reports from the Nigerian Army described the death as an accidental shooting, with Jamiu reportedly caught in the crossfire.

In a statement issued on Monday, Senator Kingibe described the loss as heartbreaking and a stark reminder of the fragility of life.

“I am deeply saddened and heartbroken by the tragic death of Abdulsamad Jamiu, a young Nigerian who lost his life in an unfortunate incident involving personnel of the Nigerian Army,” she said.

She added: “This painful loss is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent need for heightened caution and professionalism in all security operations. While preliminary reports indicate that this was an accidental shooting, the consequences are devastating and irreversible.”

Kingibe extended condolences to the deceased’s family, noting that no family should endure such pain, especially when their child was serving the nation under the NYSC scheme.

While acknowledging the Nigerian Army’s initial response to the incident, the senator demanded a thorough, transparent, and accountable investigation to ensure justice is served and lessons are learned.

“This tragic occurrence shows the urgent need to strengthen rules of engagement, improve coordination between security agencies and civilians, and ensure that our young Nigerians, especially corps members, are adequately protected at all times. Preventable incidents such as this must never be allowed to happen again,” she stated.

Senator Kingibe pledged to continue engaging relevant authorities to push for reforms that prioritize citizen safety and restore public confidence in security institutions.

She concluded by praying for the repose of Abdulsamad Jamiu’s soul and for strength for his grieving family.

The Nigerian Army has expressed regret over the incident and stated that it has initiated an investigation.

However, reports indicate that the family of the deceased has disputed the military’s account, alleging that soldiers fired through the door of Jamiu’s room at close range.
