The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared it will commence an indefinite nationwide strike from 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.
According to NARD Secretary General Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, the decision was reached after an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held virtually and followed extensive consultations with members across the country.
The strike will involve resident doctors in federal, state, and private health institutions.
The association cited the Federal Government’s review of the Professional Allowance Table policy as a key trigger.
NARD is demanding the immediate reinstatement of the Professional Allowance Table, which standardizes doctors’ remuneration, along with the prompt payment of promotion and salary arrears, and the timely release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.
While announcing the industrial action, the group emphasized its willingness to continue dialogue with the government to reach a mutually beneficial resolution that improves healthcare delivery, doctors’ welfare, and patient care outcomes.
“The strike action is aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery through better welfare and working conditions for doctors,” the statement noted.
NARD urged its members to remain united while keeping channels of communication open for timely resolution.
This latest development adds to a series of past strikes by resident doctors in Nigeria, often centered on unpaid allowances, poor working conditions, and inadequate funding for medical training.
The action is expected to significantly disrupt services in teaching hospitals and other facilities nationwide starting Tuesday.
