Police Arrest Suspected Terrorist in Kwara

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old suspected terrorist, Mallami Abubakar, for alleged links to the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Lakurawa terrorist groups.

The suspect was apprehended on April 1, 2026, around 8:00 a.m. during a routine patrol in Nanu, Kaiama Local Government Area of the state.

A joint security team comprising police operatives, National Forest Guards, and members of the Kaiama Vigilante Group made the arrest.

According to police sources, Abubakar, who hails from Isanlu Dankuturu in Kogi State, was contacted on March 30 by an accomplice identified only as ‘Babi’ from Babana Village in Niger State.

The suspect was allegedly invited to travel to Farinsuni via Baruten Local Government Area to join a group affiliated with ISWAP/Lakurawa terrorists.

Confirming the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday in Ilorin, the Kwara State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the suspect is currently in custody while a full investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of his involvement and to apprehend other connected individuals.

The state Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, reiterated the command’s commitment to the safety and security of residents.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency.

The development comes amid heightened security efforts to curb banditry and terrorism in parts of Kwara State and neighbouring areas.
