The Muslim Advocacy Group in Ogun State has demanded that the 2027 governorship position be zoned to a Muslim candidate, citing a long-standing imbalance in the state’s political leadership since its creation in 1976.
In a statement signed by Abdul Semi’u Adebesin and made available to DAILY POST, the group noted that out of five democratically elected governors in Ogun State, only one has been a Muslim.
The group argued that this persistent imbalance must be addressed to ensure equity, fairness, and consistency in the state’s politics.“Our position is firmly rooted in the principle of equity with competence,” the statement read.
The group emphasized that their demand is not based on tokenism or religious sentiment overriding merit.
They highlighted that Ogun State has many highly qualified and competent Muslim leaders in public administration, academia, business, and governance who can deliver inclusive and purposeful leadership.
“As Ogun State approaches another critical electoral cycle, the question of fairness, inclusion and equitable representation has once again come to the forefront of public discourse,” the statement added.
The Muslim Advocacy Group called on all political parties and opinion leaders to prioritize this demand for historical balance in the 2027 election, warning that ignoring it could create disaffection and undermine the state’s unity.
