Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), has accused the David Mark-led faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) of resorting to “emotional reasoning and blackmail” to escape a self-inflicted legal crisis.
Keyamo said the faction is wasting time chasing shadows by fighting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s decision to derecognise it, instead of addressing the substantive legal challenge before the court.
“The law does not allow for sentiment,” Keyamo stated. “Decisions are based on facts, evidence, and proper interpretation of the law, not on sympathy, emotion, or political considerations.”
Reacting to the faction’s rejection of INEC’s action, the minister warned that a pending court case filed by a duly elected Deputy National Chairman over the takeover of the party remains a major obstacle.
He noted that any actions taken by either faction could become invalid after INEC’s deadline for nomination of candidates, potentially leaving the ADC with no candidate for the upcoming elections.
Keyamo advised the party to view INEC’s decision positively, describing it as a timely warning that gives them options: seek an accelerated hearing in court, resolve the leadership crisis internally, or adopt a fresh political platform that is free of legal risks.
He criticised the faction’s approach of blaming INEC and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), calling it mischievous. According to him, the politicians involved failed to secure proper legal advice before attempting to hijack an existing party structure.
“They say they will proceed with their congresses and convention despite INEC’s decision and the ruling of the Court of Appeal. That is fine by us,” Keyamo said. “Never interrupt your opponent when he is making a mistake.”
The minister emphasised that the crisis stems entirely from the ADC factions’ own actions and poor judgement, not from external interference.
