NPA Pensioners Threaten to Shut Down Ports Over 16 Years of Unpaid Benefits

Retirees of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have threatened to embark on a nationwide protest, including shutting down seaports, over more than 16 years of unpaid pension benefits.

In a statement issued on Sunday, April 20, 2026, the Nigerian Ports Authority Pensioners Welfare Association said the protest would begin seven days after the publication if their demands are not met.

Led by its president, Charles Ayo Binitie, the association blamed NPA management for failing to implement the constitutionally approved five-year pension increment since 2008.

Binitie highlighted the severe hardship faced by retirees amid high inflation, noting that many receive as low as ₦30,000 to ₦50,000 monthly, with only a few earning up to ₦100,000.

He criticised the management for arbitrarily adding small percentages (3–11.5%) instead of applying the proper increments required under Section 173(3) of the Constitution.

The pensioners have written to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) and the Presidency through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), but no action has been taken.

Binitie also called on authorities to compel NPA to implement outstanding benefits, including those linked to the 2024 minimum wage.
