Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed serious concerns over the future of Nigeria’s democracy, stating that the integrity of the 2027 general elections is in grave jeopardy and that democracy itself faces an existential threat.
Atiku made the remarks while reacting to a passionate plea letter submitted to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) by counsel to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging the timely delivery of judgment in a pending Supreme Court appeal concerning the party’s leadership crisis.
The letter, dated April 28, 2026, and signed by Shaibu Enejoh Aruwa, SAN, was received at the office of the CJN on the same day.
In the letter, the ADC’s counsel highlighted that the party’s ability to meet statutory requirements and participate in the 2027 general elections depends heavily on the prompt resolution of the appeal.
The party warned that any further delay could lead to its exclusion from the polls, thereby disenfranchising millions of its supporters.
Atiku stated:“It is increasingly evident that Nigeria’s democracy, and indeed the integrity of the 2027 general elections is in serious jeopardy. Democracy itself is now facing an existential threat. However, I do not want to believe that the judiciary, long regarded as the last hope of the common man, would align with the ruling APC in any effort that could undermine or destroy our democratic foundations.”
The leadership dispute in the ADC has pitted the faction led by former Senate President Senator David Mark against another group associated with Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe.
The Supreme Court had earlier heard the appeal on April 22, 2026, and reserved judgment, with the date yet to be communicated.
The ADC letter stressed the urgency, noting that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already commenced activities related to the 2027 elections, and any prolonged uncertainty could have irreversible consequences for the party’s participation.
Atiku’s statement reflects growing anxiety within opposition circles that delays in the judiciary, or any perceived alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), could erode public confidence in democratic institutions ahead of the next general elections.
Political observers believe the resolution of the ADC leadership crisis will have significant implications not only for the party but for the broader opposition coalition as Nigeria approaches the 2027 polls.
