The Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, has adopted Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
The endorsement was announced after a high-level meeting held on Monday at the Lagos State House, Marina, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu formally backed his deputy’s ambition to succeed him.
According to reports, Hamzat formally declared his intention to contest the governorship during the closed-door meeting attended by members of the State Executive Council, key APC leaders, and prominent figures from the GAC, including former Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and others.
Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the decision as a unanimous and consensus position by all stakeholders present.
He reportedly praised Hamzat as “well-baked” and fully prepared for the leadership demands of the state.
The development signals a strong alignment within the Lagos APC structure and is expected to significantly shape the party’s succession plan as Sanwo-Olu concludes his second term in 2027.
Hamzat, who would become the first Lagos deputy governor to serve two full terms if the current administration completes its tenure, has been consulting widely with party leaders, including GAC members and former Minister Babatunde Raji Fashola, in recent weeks.
The GAC’s backing is viewed as a major boost for Hamzat’s aspiration, given the council’s influential role in determining the direction of the APC in Lagos politics.
This early endorsement is generating significant discussions within political circles in the state, with many seeing it as a strategic move to ensure continuity and stability in Lagos governance ahead of the 2027 polls.
