Lagos Evacuates Over 230 Students from UNIJOS Amid Plateau Security Crisis

The Lagos State Government has successfully evacuated more than 230 of its indigenes studying at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) in Plateau State due to escalating insecurity and unrest in the region.

The evacuation followed the temporary closure of the university and suspension of academic activities triggered by heightened security concerns and recent violence in Plateau State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration acted swiftly, deploying a convoy of buses escorted by security personnel to bring the students safely back to Lagos.

Mamud Hassan, Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education, said the move was necessary due to growing reports of insecurity in Jos.

He emphasized that the welfare of Lagos students studying outside the state remains a top priority for the government.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education Tolani Sule personally received the students upon arrival and commended the smooth collaboration between Lagos, security agencies, and Plateau State authorities.

All evacuees underwent debriefing and health checks before reuniting with their families.

Permanent Secretary Adeniran Kasali assured parents and guardians that the students were in good condition.

The operation was coordinated by Senior Special Assistant Samuel Kappo and other stakeholders to ensure it ran seamlessly.

The Lagos State Government stated it will continue monitoring the situation in Plateau State and expressed hope for the quick restoration of peace so students can resume their studies.

Officials described the evacuation as a clear demonstration of the state’s commitment to protecting its citizens and preventing insecurity from disrupting education.

Similar evacuation exercises have been carried out by other state governments, including Delta, Benue, and Adamawa, in response to the ongoing crisis in the Jos area.
