Iran Executes Two Members of Banned Opposition Group

Iran on Saturday, April 4, 2026, executed two men convicted of belonging to the banned opposition group, the People’s Mujahedin of Iran (MEK), and carrying out acts aimed at overthrowing the Islamic Republic.

The judiciary said Abolhassan Montazer and Vahid Baniamerian were hanged after their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court. They were found guilty of “rebellion through involvement in multiple terrorist acts,” membership in the MEK, and sabotage.

The executions are the latest in a series targeting MEK members, following the hanging of four other convicted members earlier this week.

The MEK, which once supported the 1979 Islamic Revolution but later fell out with the regime, has been based in exile for decades and is designated a terrorist organisation by Tehran.

The latest executions come amid ongoing regional conflict after US-Israeli strikes on February 28 that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, triggering a wider war.

Iran is the world’s second-largest executioner after China, according to human rights groups. In recent weeks, it has carried out several executions linked to alleged spying for Israel and the United States, as well as participation in anti-government protests.
