I Warned Those that Tried to Hijack ADC - Dumebi Kachikwu

Dumebi Kachikwu, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, says he had long warned that the party had become “bad market” for those who joined through the back door to hijack its leadership.

Kachikwu reacted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s refusal to recognise the David Mark-led caretaker committee of the ADC, describing the decision as just the beginning of the party’s troubles.

He noted that several court cases are still pending against the group, including at the Supreme Court, and said their only chance of success would be “if the Supreme Court can change Monday to Saturday and Saturday to Tuesday.”

“I regret to inform you that the actions of these men have rendered any political aspiration through the ADC a non-starter,” Kachikwu stated.

He traced the crisis to former ADC chairman Ralph Nwosu, whose tenure ended on August 21, 2022. According to him, Nwosu handed over the party to politicians who had destroyed their former parties and were now using the ADC as a platform to settle scores with President Bola Tinubu and the APC.

Kachikwu dismissed claims that Nigeria is drifting towards a one-party state, pointing out the existence of other active parties such as the PDP, Labour Party, NNPP, AA, AAC, SDP, ADP, APGA, and Accord.

He also criticised plans by the new leadership to conduct congresses with exorbitant form fees, raising the price from ₦50,000 to ₦500,000, which he said was designed to disenfranchise genuine grassroots members.

“They have long told us that they seek political office to better the lot of the masses, yet they can’t be in a party where the masses hold sway,” he added.
