The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown the 2027 governorship contest and other elective positions wide open, stressing its commitment to internal democracy.
Party Chairman, Cornelius Ojelabi, made the declaration on Thursday during a meeting with local government chairmen in the state.
The announcement comes amid intense speculation over who will succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
Recent reports suggested the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) had zoned the ticket to Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, while other sources claimed former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is being strongly considered for a return.
Prominent names already linked to the race include President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu; former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; and Principal Secretary to the President, Hakeem Muri-Okunola.
Addressing the local government leaders, Ojelabi said the party would primarily adopt direct primaries in line with the Electoral Act, but would also consider consensus arrangements where such agreements are genuinely reached and widely accepted.
“As a progressive party, we will give all members a level-playing field to contest the positions of their choice in a free, fair and transparent manner that will produce the real representatives of the various constituencies,” he stated.
The development signals that no candidate has been anointed yet, and the race remains open to all interested party members.
