Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended his history of switching political parties, saying his moves are driven by principle and a refusal to engage in transactional politics.
In an interview on Arise TV, Obi explained that his political journey, from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and then to the Labour Party was motivated by his commitment to good governance rather than personal gain.
“I moved from APGA to the PDP because of issues with my successor. Rather than allow it to become destructive to governance, I moved out,” he stated.
Speaking about his departure from the PDP, Obi was blunt: “People were not playing by the rules. It was transactional. I cannot be part of a transactional system.”
Obi emphasised that he prioritises stability and integrity over party loyalty when internal crises threaten effective governance.
He also addressed challenges within the Labour Party, noting internal conflicts and legal issues that created instability.
“We must dismantle this criminality that exists today,” Obi said, stressing the need for genuine reform in Nigeria’s political system.
He added that current political realignments should focus on present commitments: “What is important is not what people were yesterday, but what they are today.”
Obi expressed readiness to collaborate with individuals genuinely committed to change, while warning that any compromised process would be resisted.
“We are ready to work with people who are committed to change. If the process is compromised again, we will continue the fight,” he declared.
The statement comes as opposition figures engage in intense political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
