A prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) leader, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, has claimed that the recent surge in violence and killings in Plateau State is a deliberate political strategy aimed at weakening President Bola Tinubu’s support ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The attacks gained fresh attention after more than 20 people were reportedly killed in a Palm Sunday assault on the Gariya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area. The incident has raised concerns about a possible escalation into broader insecurity in the state.
In a statement issued on Monday, Zazzaga, who serves as Chairman of the North-Central APC Forum and hails from Plateau State, asserted that the violence is orchestrated by opposition figures seeking to derail Tinubu’s re-election bid and tarnish the image of Plateau Governor Caleb Muftwang, who recently defected to the APC.
“The ongoing attacks and killings in Plateau State are politically motivated. Those behind these killings are opposition politicians who want to derail Mr President’s re-election in the 2027 elections. These are also people who want to discredit Governor Caleb Muftwang, knowing fully well that they can’t stop his re-election,” Zazzaga said.
He argued that with Muftwang’s move to the APC, Plateau State could deliver near-unanimous support for Tinubu, prompting enemies of the administration to sponsor violence in a bid to reduce voter turnout among native populations sympathetic to the president and governor.
Zazzaga further connected the Plateau incidents to similar unrest in Benue State, describing them as part of a larger plot targeting North-Central communities to undermine Tinubu’s government. He highlighted the zone’s strategic importance, noting that it became the first with six APC governors following Muftwang’s defection and has pledged six million votes for Tinubu in 2027.
The APC chieftain praised President Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos to commiserate with victims, interpreting it as a sign of empathy and strong leadership. He also urged security agencies to investigate political motives behind the insecurity and called on religious leaders to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could fuel violence.
This latest commentary comes amid ongoing national concerns over insecurity in Plateau and other regions, even as the APC has vowed justice for the victims and commended federal responses to the crisis.
