Divisions have surfaced within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Daura, Katsina State, following the endorsement of late President Muhammadu Buhari’s son, Yusuf Buhari, as the party’s candidate for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency.
Last week, a group of APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area announced Yusuf Buhari as their preferred candidate for the House of Representatives seat ahead of the 2027 elections.
The council chairman, Usman Na Lado, described the endorsement as a collective decision aimed at strengthening the party’s chances.
The group also endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term and Governor Dikko Umar Radda for re-election as governor, while backing Speaker Nasiru Yahaya Daura for the Daura Senatorial District seat.
However, prominent stakeholders from five local government areas in the Daura Emirate, Daura, Sandamu, Mai’adua, Baure, and Zango have strongly opposed the move, describing it as an imposition by a few individuals holding government positions.
At a meeting held this weekend, the stakeholders rejected the alleged imposition of candidates and denied claims that Governor Dikko Radda had approved or directed the selection.
Barrister Usman Ahmed El-Marzuk, a former national legal adviser of the APC in Daura, who chaired the meeting, said the governor had consistently maintained that each zone should decide its own candidates through democratic means.
“There is nowhere the governor has said that any candidate should be imposed. These claims are false,” he stated.
El-Marzuk warned that such actions could cause serious divisions within the party and benefit the opposition ahead of the 2027 polls. He stressed that the APC constitution allows for either consensus or open primaries.
The Chairman of Daura Local Government, Hon. Bala Musa Daura, also urged the public to disregard reports suggesting the governor endorsed any specific candidates.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matters, Yau Umar Gwajo-Gwajo, equally confirmed that Governor Radda had issued no directives endorsing or imposing candidates in the Daura zone.
