APM Terminals, NPA Launch Mandatory Drug, Alcohol Tests for Truck Drivers

APM Terminals Apapa and the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) have commenced a mandatory drug and alcohol screening programme for external truck drivers operating within the Apapa Port complex.

The initiative, which aims to enhance safety and reduce risks associated with impaired driving, involves breathalyser tests conducted at the port gate.

The screenings are carried out with the support of the Port Police and Port Health Services.

Lagos Port Manager, Adebowale Lawal Ibrahim, explained that the measure is designed to ensure that drivers of heavy-duty vehicles remain fully alert while operating inside the port.

“Verifying the condition of drivers is essential to maintaining safety within the port,” he said, adding that routine testing would discourage substance abuse and promote greater compliance among truck operators.

In the latest round of testing, 30 drivers were screened, out of which three tested positive for alcohol a noticeable reduction compared to previous exercises.

Managing Director of APM Terminals Apapa, Kamal Alhraishat, noted that the company has achieved 636 days without a lost time injury and is committed to sustaining this record by extending safety protocols to third-party drivers.

“Impaired driving poses serious risks not only to the drivers themselves but also to other road users, port staff, and critical infrastructure,” Alhraishat warned.

He added that the combination of consistent enforcement and awareness campaigns will help address substance use issues and promote safer behaviour among drivers over time.
