NMA election crisis: Over 200 delegates converge in Abuja Wednesday

A leadership showdown looms in the Nigerian Medical Association as over 200 delegates head to Abuja for an Emergency Delegates Meeting on Wednesday, following the disqualification of candidates for the ADM elections.

A statement issued on Monday and made available to newsmen in Lokoja by Dr Oreyemi Ifedayo, Chairman of States Chairmen of the association, said that the disqualifications, announced in recent weeks, have been condemned by state chairmen, caucuses, and the Committee of Past Presidents, who want NMA President Bala Audu to reverse the decision. Observers say the move risks a “breakdown of order” in the association.

Dr. Ifedayo said the Emergency Delegate Meeting became necessary after interventions failed.

“The Committee of Past Presidents has met and resolved that these disqualifications must be reversed to ensure a level playing field,” he stated, adding that the committee’s decisions are final under the constitution.

“It is regrettable that the President has disregarded these interventions and appears set on a course that may cause chaos.

“Delegates will meet on April 22 to deliberate and restore peace. All arrangements are in place, with over 200 attendees verified,” Ifedayo said.
