Prominent publisher and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Dele Momodu has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of a major strategic blunder in underestimating the potential for opposition unity among key political figures.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Momodu asserted that the APC wrongly assumed former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso would never collaborate politically.
“The truth is, they first let the ADC stay out of it, hoping that Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Kwankwaso would never team up together. It was a miscalculation,” Momodu said.
He claimed the APC has been actively working to destabilize major opposition parties, including through rapid actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in recognizing certain PDP factions. According to Momodu, this reflects the ruling party’s overconfidence in its power and its efforts to sow division.
Momodu also expressed concern over increasing judicial involvement in political matters, alleging that top government officials are attempting to influence the judiciary while exploiting economic hardships to consolidate power.
“High-level government officials are putting a lot of resources into the judiciary as part of their overall plan. When you use poverty as a weapon, people end up relying on getting rice given out to them,” he noted.
He warned against turning Nigeria into a one-party or one-man state, stating that such efforts, though they may take time to unravel, are ultimately unsustainable.
Momodu’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about opposition realignments ahead of future elections, highlighting tensions and potential coalitions among Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso, and other figures.
