Alleged Coup Plot: Nigerian Govt to Arraign Timipre Sylva’s Younger Brother, Others

The Nigerian government will today arraign Paganengigha Anagha, the younger brother of former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, over an alleged 2025 coup plot against President Bola Tinubu.

Anagha will be arraigned alongside three others: Sylva’s driver, Musa Mohammed; his plainclothes police detail, Ayuba Reuben; and escort driver, Friday Lusa Paul.

The four are scheduled to appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja, specifically Court 12, on Tuesday, April 14, 2026.

Details of the charges have not been made public, but sources at the office of the Attorney General of the Federation confirmed the arraignment will proceed as planned.

The case stems from allegations that Timipre Sylva was a major financier of a failed plot to overthrow the Tinubu administration in late 2025.

Reports claimed that sums ranging from N785 million to N46 billion, traced to his bank accounts, were funnelled into the alleged scheme.

In October 2025, soldiers and operatives of the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) raided Sylva’s residences in Abuja and Bayelsa, leading to the arrest of his younger brother and aides.

Sylva, who was abroad at the time, reportedly moved between countries including Senegal and Argentina to evade arrest.

The alleged coup was also linked to the detention of about 16 military officers accused of holding secret meetings to topple the civilian government.

Sylva’s media aide, Julius Bokoru, had earlier dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, insisting that his principal had no involvement in any coup plot.

“Chief Timipre Sylva has no involvement whatsoever, either in planning or logistics with any such plot. He is a thoroughbred democrat whose political career remains clear to all Nigerians,” Bokoru stated.

The aide added that Sylva was abroad receiving medical treatment with his wife and remained a supporter of President Tinubu.

Following the allegations, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) declared Sylva wanted in November 2025 over a separate $14.8 million fraud investigation.
