Security has been significantly strengthened at the Rainbow Event Centre in Abuja as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) holds its national convention today, Tuesday, April 14, 2026.
About 3,000 delegates from across the country are participating in the event to elect a new National Working Committee (NWC) that will lead the party for the next four years.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) are conducting thorough checks on delegates and journalists at the entrance, while patrol vehicles are stationed at strategic points around the venue.
The convention is taking place amid an ongoing leadership crisis in the ADC, with two factions claiming leadership of the party.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had suspended recognition of all factions following a Court of Appeal ruling.
Senator Dino Melaye, speaking at the venue, said the event would proceed despite alleged attempts to stop it.“Yesterday, there were deliberate efforts to stop us. All venues we applied for were not approved. As at 11 p.m. last night, the owners of this venue attempted to cancel, but we stood our ground,” Melaye said.
Mr Kabiru Saje of the party’s New Media Committee added that the convention would either produce new leadership or reaffirm the current one.
“The atmosphere is positive, delegates are arriving, and the event will go on as planned,” he stated. The convention started around 11 a.m.
