Yusuf Buhari, the only son of Nigeria’s late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has formally declared his intention to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives in the 2027 general elections.
In a letter dated April 3, 2026, titled “Expression of Interest to Contest for the Seat of House of Representatives Sandamu/Daura/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency,” and personally signed by him, Yusuf expressed his ambition to represent the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“With all respect, I am extremely delighted to write and inform you of my intention to contest for the seat of House of Representatives at the above-mentioned constituency (Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua), under the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC),” the letter reads.
“After wide consultations, I wish to contest for the seat, as my contribution to ensure a good and qualitative leadership. Your support will help my ambition to succeed, to bring infrastructural development as well as human support and development to the people of this constituency.”
The declaration comes shortly after APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area endorsed him as their preferred candidate for the seat.
At a high-level meeting held at the Sandamu LG secretariat, party leaders, including elected officials and political appointees, threw their weight behind Yusuf, describing the move as a collective resolution based on his “perceived capacity and acceptance among stakeholders.”
The council chairman, Usman Na-Lado, who addressed the gathering, also reaffirmed support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Dikko Radda for the 2027 presidential and governorship races respectively.
Sources within the party claim the endorsement aligns with directives from Governor Radda.
Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad also confirmed the development, noting that Yusuf made the decision after wide consultations with stakeholders.
This marks Yusuf Buhari’s most prominent foray into active politics since his father left office.
The move has already sparked discussions and mixed reactions across the political landscape as parties gear up for the 2027 elections.
