Prominent Nigerian political activist Aisha Yesufu has issued a strong warning to former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, declaring that she will actively oppose him if he attempts to run for a second term in office.
Yesufu made the remarks during a Monday appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme.
She emphasised that Obi has repeatedly committed to serving only one term as president, a pledge he made even before the 2023 elections.
“If Peter Obi gets into office as president and decides to do more than one term, I will oppose him with everything in me because he gave his word, and he has to stick to his words,” Yesufu stated firmly.
She recounted a personal conversation with Obi in which she sought explicit confirmation of his one-term promise to protect her own integrity when campaigning for him.
“I sat down with Mr Peter Obi and I said to him, I need your word on this... Is it true you’re going to do just one term? He said, Aisha, I told you, even in 2023 and I still mean it,” she recalled.
Yesufu stressed that she does not take her public endorsements lightly and expects leaders to honour their commitments. “I don’t joke with my name. I don’t joke with my integrity,” she added, expressing confidence that Obi is a man of his word but making it clear she would fight any attempt to break it.
The activist’s comments come amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as various opposition figures and movements position themselves for the next presidential race.
Yesufu has been a vocal supporter of Obi and recently aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
