2027: Kwankwaso’s Exit Means NNPP Is Dead – Kwankwasiyya Movement

The Kwankwasiyya Movement has declared that the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) is effectively finished following the exit of its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 1, 2026, the movement described Kwankwaso’s departure from the NNPP as the final blow to the party, which had relied heavily on the massive grassroots support of the Kwankwasiyya structure during the 2023 elections.

The movement’s spokesperson, Habib Mohammed, confirmed that all arrangements had been concluded for Kwankwaso to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He directed all members of the Kwankwasiyya Movement nationwide to immediately register with the ADC and fully participate in the affairs of the new party.

Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the NNPP’s 2023 presidential candidate, defected to the ADC on Monday amid ongoing internal crises and leadership disputes within the NNPP.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement, which forms the core support base that delivered significant votes for the NNPP in 2023, especially in Kano and parts of the North, insisted that without Kwankwaso and his loyalists, the party has lost its relevance and viability.

This development is seen as a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with Kwankwaso and his supporters seeking a stronger platform to pursue their ambitions.

The NNPP has been grappling with internal rifts, including the earlier exit of Kano Governor Abba Yusuf and some allies. Party sources had earlier expressed surprise at the manner of Kwankwaso’s defection announcement, which was made directly by the Kwankwasiyya Movement rather than the party leadership.

The move has sparked widespread reactions, with many viewing it as a strategic step towards building a broader opposition coalition for 2027.
