Youths Attack, Kill Two Army Officers While Responding to Dispute in Cross River

Two Nigerian Army officers, including an intelligence officer, were killed in a violent ambush by youths while responding to a communal dispute in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State.

The incident occurred amid escalating tensions between the Isabang and Alesi communities, a crisis-prone zone with a history of boundary and resource-related conflicts.

According to security sources, the violence stemmed from an earlier altercation on March 11, 2026. A 25-year-old miner named Ibrahim Musa, who extracts and trades tin ore in Ekuri village, was reportedly assaulted by local youths at a village checkpoint. The attackers allegedly beat him and confiscated his mined minerals.

Musa reported the incident to troops at the 245 Battalion, Edor Barracks, located near Jenifer Etuh’s Hospital in Ochon. In response, soldiers deployed into the forest to apprehend four youths suspected of carrying out the assault.

During the operation, the troops came under heavy attack from the youths, resulting in the deaths of the two officers. The clash highlights ongoing security challenges in the region, where communal disputes frequently draw military intervention and turn deadly.

Authorities have yet to release official statements confirming the casualties or detailing further actions, but the incident has raised concerns about the safety of security personnel deployed to mediate local conflicts.
