Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has firmly denied allegations that he sought the support of Daniel Bwala, President Bola Tinubu's Special Adviser on Policy Communication, for his 2023 election bid.
The denial came in response to recent claims by Bwala, who alleged that Obi attempted to recruit him into the Labour Party campaign.
Bwala stated that the approach was made through former President Olusegun Obasanjo during a meeting in London at the Hilton Hotel, involving Obi's running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed and other figures. Bwala said he declined the offer, despite his respect for Obasanjo, and noted that Ambassador Amuchi Osuk was reportedly appointed to coordinate early campaign efforts.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, Obi dismissed the accusations as baseless and not worthy of a response, citing Bwala's "well-documented history of dishonesty." The statement emphasized that Obi had no dealings with Bwala and explicitly excludes individuals like him from his political activities, rejecting any form of transactional politics.
The statement read in part: “Normally, we would not dignify Bwala’s baseless accusations with a reply... However, we feel it is necessary to address this matter for the benefit of the public, who may be misled. Obi has made it clear that he excludes individuals like Bwala from his political activities and any form of transactional politics that sustain people like him in political circles.
"The Obi that Nigerians know and appreciate will never engage in such practices. He would rather allocate resources to provide desks for children in Bwala’s village than pay him to concoct falsehoods for public consumption.”
It further highlighted Obi's commitment to good governance and inviting people to join based on shared vision rather than payment, adding: “For the umpteenth time, we call on Bwala and others like him to count Obi out of their greed, repent, and join us in the quest for a new Nigeria.”
The exchange highlights ongoing political tensions and verbal sparring between figures aligned with the current administration and opposition leaders, stemming from events around the 2023 general elections.
