Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, has described the current situation in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a challenging period for both the party and Nigeria's democracy, following the recent defection of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
Lawal officially resigned from the PDP and defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, March 9, 2026.
This move has left only two governors elected on the PDP platform: Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State.
Makinde made the remarks on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, while addressing an expanded meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT) in Abuja. He stated: “It’s a challenging period for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is also a challenging period for democracy in Nigeria.”
The Oyo governor highlighted the unprecedented nature of the political landscape, saying he had consulted experienced political figures who had never witnessed such a scenario.
“I have been talking to people of knowledge, people who have been involved in the political evolution of this country, and none of them have seen a political landscape like what we are witnessing today,” he added.
Acknowledging the reduced number of PDP governors, Makinde remarked: “I can only say we are only two remaining, but we are not bothered.”He urged party leaders to act with awareness of their historical legacy, emphasizing: “So, whatever role we want to play as individuals and collectively as a party, we must be conscious of what history is going to record against or for us for this period.”
Makinde concluded on an optimistic note, quoting: “Weeping may endure for the night, but in the morning, joy cometh.”
The defection comes amid ongoing internal crises in the PDP, which has seen several high-profile exits in recent times.
Lawal's switch to the APC further strengthens the ruling party, increasing its number of governors to 31.
