President Bola Tinubu has ordered the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG) to immediately distribute about 100,000 CNG conversion kits across Nigeria to help ease the burden of surging petrol prices on citizens.
The directive comes amid rising fuel costs triggered by escalating conflict in the Middle East, which has disrupted global oil supplies and driven up pump prices in Nigeria.
Ismaeel Ahmed, Executive Chairman of Pi-CNG, disclosed the president's instruction on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, after a meeting with Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Ahmed stated that the president gave a direct mandate for the swift deployment of the kits, with about 100,000 units set to be rolled out over the next two to three weeks.
He explained that the conversion kits will enable vehicle owners, including tricycle (keke) operators to switch their petrol engines to run on cheaper and cleaner compressed natural gas (CNG).
The initiative aims to reduce transportation costs for commuters and commercial operators while promoting the broader adoption of CNG as an alternative fuel source.
Ahmed added that conversion centres nationwide will see increased activity to handle the accelerated rollout, in collaboration with various stakeholders.
This move aligns with the government's ongoing push under the Pi-CNG programme to expand CNG infrastructure, including refilling stations and incentives for vehicle conversions, as part of efforts to achieve energy security and lower living expenses for Nigerians.
