Aviation Minister Orders Hybrid Payment at Airport Gates from March 13

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the introduction of a hybrid payment system at all Nigerian airport access gates, allowing both cash and card payments, effective Friday, March 13, 2026.

This follows the earlier suspension of the fully cashless policy, which was halted by President Bola Tinubu due to severe traffic congestion caused at major airports after its rollout on March 1, 2026.

According to a statement by Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, the decision was reached after a review meeting involving Keyamo, officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and senior ministry staff.

The ministry has committed to engaging concessionaires to eventually implement a fully automated, cashless electronic system across all airport gates to eliminate cash handling and reduce revenue leakages.

In the interim, the hybrid model will resume operations by accepting both cash and electronic payments (including cards, POS terminals, and other approved digital channels).

Existing FAAN Go Cashless Card holders can continue using their cards until further notice, while the public is encouraged to obtain and adopt the FAAN Go Cashless Card as FAAN works to fully optimise the digital payment infrastructure.

The directive restores a more practical payment arrangement at airport entrances while the long-term transition to a complete electronic system continues.
