Troops Arrest Suspected ISWAP Spy in Yobe

Nigerian Army troops have arrested a man suspected of acting as a spy for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Kanama, Yunusari Local Government Area of Yobe State.

The suspect, identified as Malam Fantami, a native of Dikwa in Borno State, was apprehended during a targeted security operation by troops of the 159 Battalion, in collaboration with members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).

According to security sources cited by Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad-focused security publication, the arrest stemmed from credible intelligence indicating that Fantami was serving as an informant for ISWAP-affiliated terrorists in the region.

Items recovered from the suspect include a mobile phone, smartwatch, prayer beads, a motorcycle key, and N7,000 in cash. Examination of the phone reportedly revealed suspicious materials, such as photographs of motorcycles, large sums of cash, and AK-47 rifles.

“The discovery of these materials has raised serious suspicion about the suspect’s role as a possible logistics informant or intelligence asset for insurgent elements operating in the region,” a source close to the incident stated.

Kanama, situated near the Niger Republic border, is frequently used as a corridor for insurgent movement and supply lines in the Lake Chad basin.

The suspect is currently in military custody, where he is undergoing further interrogation to uncover any collaborators or additional details of his activities.

The operation forms part of ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the North-East to disrupt intelligence and logistics networks supporting ISWAP and other insurgent groups.
