President Bola Tinubu has approved the acquisition of additional military equipment and directed a strategic review of anti-terrorism operations following a surge in attacks on military positions in Nigeria's North-East.
The directive came during a two-hour security meeting at the Presidential Villa on Thursday with top service chiefs, intelligence heads, and the new Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
The session, the first of its kind since Disu assumed office focused on adapting tactics to recent insurgent offensives, particularly in Borno and Yobe states.Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd.), speaking to journalists afterward, said the meeting provided President Tinubu with a comprehensive operational update.
He acknowledged intensified attacks on bases but highlighted significant successes by Nigerian forces, including the elimination of terrorist commanders, recovery of targeted locations, and heavier casualties inflicted on insurgents.
Musa noted that while the military has suffered losses “courageous personnel who paid the ultimate price” troops are actively reclaiming strategic areas.
He attributed the spike in violence partly to Ramadan-period ideological motivations but reassured Nigerians: “Our appeal is not to get tired or discouraged.”
The renewed push follows a series of coordinated assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, including overrunning multiple forward operating bases in less than a week and attacks on locations such as Ngoshe, Konduga, Marte, Jakana, and Mainok in Borno State.
In a related development, troops of Operation HADIN KAI repelled a multi-directional ISWAP attack on a position in Goniri, Yobe State, between March 9–10, killing over 20 insurgents.
The fighters were detected advancing from Goniri village and Ngamdu Junction, according to a statement from Lt. Col. Sani Uba of the Joint Task Force.
President Tinubu had earlier assured service chiefs during an Iftar gathering on March 6 that Nigeria would defeat terrorism without yielding.
Vice President Kashim Shettima also vowed to deploy overwhelming force to end the insurgency.Separately, IGP Disu presided over the ceremonial pull-out parade for his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun, at Force Headquarters in Abuja.
Disu praised Egbetokun’s contributions to professional policing and recalled their shared service under Tinubu in Lagos, while Egbetokun described his tenure as part of an ongoing institutional journey.
