The Obidient Movement has sharply criticized former Senator Dino Melaye following his televised comments questioning the timing and unifying capacity of Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
During a March 12, 2026 appearance on Channels Television, Melaye, now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), praised Peter Obi,
former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State as a "fantastic Nigerian" and a "great man" deserving of "tremendous respect." Despite the compliments, he firmly stated that Obi "lacks the capacity to unify Nigeria" and insisted that "this is not his time to be President.
"In a swift response released on March 13, 2026, the Obidient Movement, led nationally by coordinator Yunusa Tanko, described Melaye's remarks as a "profound misreading of the current Nigerian political reality" and an unintentional echo of the same establishment thinking that has perpetuated division and underdevelopment for decades.
While appreciating Melaye's kind words about Obi, the group strongly rejected the notion that any political figure or gatekeeper has the authority to declare when it is or is not someone's "time" to lead. They labeled such gatekeeping as one of the primary reasons Nigeria has remained trapped in cycles of poor governance and economic hardship.
The movement highlighted Peter Obi's track record in the 2023 presidential election, where he successfully forged a wide-ranging, multi-ethnic, multi-regional, and multi-religious coalition that cut across traditional voting blocs, an achievement they say clearly demonstrates his proven ability to unify Nigerians behind a vision of productive, people-centered leadership.
The statement reframed the national conversation: "The real question before Nigerians today is not whether it is Peter Obi's time. The question is whether Nigeria can afford to continue with business as usual or whether 2027 finally presents the opportunity to break free from failed leadership, deepening poverty, and manufactured disunity. For millions of Obidients and ordinary Nigerians, the answer is a resounding yes."
