Taraba, Benue Governors Hold Joint Security Meeting in Wukari to Tackle Border Insecurity

Governors Agbu Kefas of Taraba State and Hyacinth Alia of Benue State convened a high-level security and peace meeting in Wukari, Taraba State, to address ongoing insecurity plaguing border communities in both states.

The delegations included senior government officials, heads of security agencies, and prominent traditional rulers.

The focus was on finding sustainable solutions to the persistent challenges, including attacks, displacement, and threats to lives and property along the shared border.

Upon arrival, Governor Alia paid a courtesy visit to the Aku Uka of Wukari (Jukun Kingdom), Ishaku Adda Ali (also referred to as Manu Ishaku in reports), recognizing the vital role of traditional institutions in fostering peace and stability.

Governor Alia emphasized that he led a full Benue State team to Wukari to bolster collaboration with Taraba in combating insecurity. He highlighted the urgent need for synergy between the neighboring states to restore calm, protect citizens, and safeguard communities.

He praised the Aku Uka for his peace-building contributions at state and national levels, underscoring that engaging traditional rulers is essential for long-term security success.

Governor Kefas described the meeting as a clear sign of both leaders' determination to end the crisis. He announced the establishment of a joint committee to implement agreed resolutions and ensure ongoing follow-up and action.

The Tor Tiv, James Ayatse, stressed the value of peaceful coexistence between the peoples of Taraba and Benue, calling on all stakeholders to embrace dialogue and unity.

The Aku Uka expressed hope that the discussions would lead to positive, lasting results and offered prayers for enduring peace in the affected areas.

Following the meeting, the governors visited internally displaced persons (IDPs) in communities such as Abako in Benue State and Chanchanji (and Peva) in Taraba State.

They assured residents of enhanced security measures to enable safe returns to ancestral homes, along with immediate relief materials and sustained government support to alleviate their hardships.
