Women leaders from across the Niger Delta have ramped up demands for greater political inclusion, robust democratic institutions, and faster-paced development in the region.
The appeal took center stage at the Niger Delta Women Conference 2026, held under the theme “Empowering Niger Delta Women for Enhanced Political Inclusion, Peace and Development.”
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, speaking at the event, directly urged women to reject any notion of second-class status in politics, emphasizing that they deserve full and equitable inclusion rather than token measures like special reserved seats.
He argued that true progress comes from merit-based participation and equal opportunities, drawing parallels to systems where women have advanced without quotas.
The conference was chaired by former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, with strong support from Governor Diri and Rivers State Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, who both endorsed the women's push for meaningful representation and regional advancement.
