Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo has called on the Igbo people and the broader South-East region to rally behind President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election, cautioning that supporting alternative candidates would amount to squandering their votes.
Soludo made the appeal during his second-term inauguration ceremony on Tuesday at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, the state capital.
The event saw him and his deputy, Onyekachukwu Ibezim, sworn in by the state's Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu.High-profile attendees included Vice-President Kashim Shettima, as well as former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.
In his address, Soludo emphasized strategic political engagement for the Igbo nation, acknowledging the importance of one day seeing an Igbo president but stressing that the timing is not yet ripe.
He described President Tinubu as "a cerebral, courageous and patriotic Nigerian," adding that the South-East has confidence in his administration due to positive developments impacting the region.
"President Tinubu is a cerebral, courageous and patriotic Nigerian. We trust him to make a major difference for Nigeria and the south-east," Soludo said.
The governor urged the region to avoid "wasting" votes on other contenders in 2027 and instead align with Tinubu to advance national and regional interests.
He also called for unity among political rivals in Anambra, urging a shift from contestation to focused governance and development.
Vice-President Shettima commended Soludo's leadership, highlighting his integrity and idea-driven approach, while reaffirming the federal government's commitment to partnering with Anambra to boost its status as an economic and investment hub.
The remarks come amid ongoing discussions on Igbo political strategy ahead of the next general elections, with Soludo positioning support for Tinubu as a pragmatic move for greater influence and progress.
