The police have arrested Tajudeen Baruwa, leader of a faction in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), hours after he and his supporters stormed and took control of the union's national secretariat in Abuja on Monday, March 23, 2026.
The incident stems from a long-running leadership dispute within the NURTW. Baruwa's group invaded the headquarters in the early hours, displacing the faction loyal to Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, who was elected National President in November 2024.
Court rulings, including decisions from the National Industrial Court and upheld by higher courts, have reportedly favored Baruwa as the legitimate leader, prompting his faction to reclaim the secretariat.
Supporters of Baruwa claim the takeover was carried out lawfully, with prior notifications to security agencies and backed by court orders recognizing his presidency.A video circulating online shows scenes from the takeover operation.
Following the action, police intervened and arrested Baruwa. Details on the specific charges or the current status of his detention were not immediately available.
The NURTW has been plagued by factional rivalries for years, often leading to tensions over control of the powerful transport workers' union, which influences commercial transport operations across Nigeria.
