Zamfara Gov Orders Appointees Eyeing 2027 Polls to Resign

Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal has directed all political appointees and council members in his administration who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign immediately.

The directive, announced recently, aims to ensure undivided attention to governance and prevent any conflicts of interest or distraction from official duties as preparations for the upcoming polls intensify.

According to reports, the order specifically targets those planning to run for various positions, including local government councils, state assembly, National Assembly, or other elective roles.

Governor Lawal emphasized the need for appointees to focus fully on delivering dividends of democracy to the people of Zamfara rather than engaging in early political campaigns.

This move aligns with a growing trend among Nigerian governors and at the federal level, where similar directives have been issued in recent weeks.

For instance, President Bola Tinubu recently ordered federal political appointees seeking elective offices to step down by March 31, 2026, to promote transparency and compliance with electoral guidelines.

In Zamfara, the instruction has been communicated to affected officials, with expectations that resignations will be submitted promptly.

No specific deadline was mentioned in initial reports, but the governor's stance underscores a commitment to administrative efficiency amid the state's ongoing security and development challenges.

The decision comes as political activities ahead of 2027 begin to heat up across the country, with parties and aspirants positioning themselves early.

Governor Lawal's administration has faced scrutiny over insecurity and governance issues in the northwest state, making the focus on service delivery a key priority in his messaging.

Further details on the number of affected appointees or any immediate resignations were not immediately available.
